 I understand how uncomfortable is the feeling of having your belly so bloated every single day without knowing why? You might feel hungry but you do not feel like eating because you are so big. You may wake up with a flat stomach and as soon as you start eating, you get so bloated that you look pregnant. You do not even feel like dressing nicely (just baggy clothes) or being social or staying up late with friends. So it does affect your social life!

I struggled during more than 15 years being overweight (as you can see in the photo in my teenage years) and all related to chronic gastrointestinal problems. As a kid, I didn't understand why I was bigger than my friends, and I certainly had no idea what to do about it. As I got older, I became more and more frustrated with my weight. I also suffered of abdominal bloating, gas, constipation, heartburn, Helicobacter pylori infection, SIBO and Candida overgrowth. I tried different approaches like natural laxatives, artificial fiber, antibiotics to get rid of the bacteria...........none of them worked and increased my symptoms. After many years living with them, I finally decided to do something else and went to the nutritionist who put me on a gluten and dairy free diet.

My constipation got better but it did not improve my other symptoms. Going gluten free is not the only way to feel better. Sometimes it is even worse because we start eating a lot of processed gluten free products that substitute gluten for sugar, which feeds the bad bacteria in our gut. Finally, when I realized I had to make the right dietary and lifestyle changes that fit my body, using Functional Medicine, is when I started changing in the right direction. I never felt better in my life! It has improved the way my body feels and how I feel about myself.

I practice Functional Medicine, which focuses on finding the root causes of the health concern and create individualize plans for my patients. I am specialized in digestive, inflammation, and immune system disorders, which are the root causes of many symptoms that you may have and didn't even know they were connected.

Why all Disease begin in the Gut?

The way we eat and the way we live condition our digestive and immune system (80% of the immune system is in the digestive system). Different factors including chronic stress, poor diet, hormones, medication, environmental toxins or infections are some of the factors that induce gut inflammation and leaky gut syndrome. Gut inflammation is associated with symptoms/disorders/diseases presented in this image.

It is important to take action and make good choices in nutrition and lifestyle to restore the intestinal barrier,  immune function and gut microbes. 

I focus on each person's concerns and symptoms to establish an individualized approach.
